São Paulo – The United Nations Higher Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) called on Friday (10) for US$ 145 million to help Sudanese refugees who leave the country heading towards the neighbouring Ethiopia and South Sudan. They are victims of the conflict in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile.
According to the UNHCR, 185,000 people have already left Sudan for other countries, without, however, having a place to stay. A UNHCR spokesperson, Adrian Edwards, said that these refugees are in areas of difficult access and close to the conflict.
Edwards also said that the 30,000 refugees who left Sudan this year alone are more than the UNHCR projected. "We forecast arrivals of more people [to South Sudan and Ethiopia] in coming months, with deterioration of human conditions in conflict zones,” said the spokesperson.
