New York – The United Nations General Assembly has appointed Portugal’s António Guterres this Thursday (13), by acclamation, as the new UN secretary-general. The move was the final step in the succession process. Current secretary-general Ban Ki-moon will step down on December 31.
Guterres, aged 67, will hold the position for five years. He served as prime minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002, and led the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) from June 2005 to December 2015.
