São Paulo – This Friday (23rd) the United Nations made a plea for US$ 84 million to aid syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq. The UN’s High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that 40,000 Syrians have left the country since the conflicts started last year.
The funds will be used under the Syria Regional Response Plan, which contemplates the needs of Syrian refugees who have left the country since March 2011. ““The plan is based on an estimate that in the next six months assistance will be needed to support some 100,000 people. This will mainly comprise Syrian refugees, as well as some third-country nationals,” said UNHCR spokesperson Adrian Edwards.
The plan does not compute humanitarian needs in Syrian territory. It aims to ensure that Syrians will have access to neighbouring countries and to international protection, that their basic needs will be met, and that contingency measures are adopted in case there is a large-scale flow of refugees.
