Atlanta (USA) – The United Nations Human Rights Council has passed a resolution this Friday (26th) in Geneva condemning so-called vulture funds, such as the speculative funds that purchased Argentinian government bonds. The draft was passed with 33 votes in favour, five votes against (including the United States’) and nine abstentions.
The resolution “condemns the activities of vulture funds," lamenting the "direct negative effect that the debt repayment to (such) funds, under predatory conditions, has on the capacity of governments to fulfil their human rights obligations, particularly economic, social and cultural rights and the right to development. " Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Russia, Venezuela, Peru, Uruguay, Paraguay, El Salvador and Bolivia joined Argentina in tabling the resolution.
