New York – The United Nations Security Council (UN) unanimously approved this Monday (19) a resolution that provides for the shipping of UN observers to Aleppo. They will monitor civilians so they can exit the city safely. The news was made public by Ansa.
The deal is said to have been reached behind closed doors with the Security Council’s member countries, after France agreed to amendments proposed by Russia.
The French ambassador with the UN, François Delattre, said the Council’s 15 member countries agreed upon a resolution “based exactly” on the French draft, whereby international observers are to oversee the evacuation of civilians from Aleppo and guarantee their safety.
Delattre noted that the observers will not require authorization from the Syrian government in order to work. His Russian colleague, Vitaly Churkin, said it is a “good text.” Local sources said the resolution calls for adequate, neutral monitoring and direct observation of evacuations in Aleppo.
