São Paulo – Filippo Grandi is the new high commissioner of the UN’s refugee agency (UNHCR). The Italian took over the position this Monday (4th) for a five-year term, replacing Antonio Guterres, which held the post for more than ten years.
Grandi has worked in the international affairs for over 30 years, 27 of them with the United Nations. Formerly head of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), he visited Brazil in 2012 for a meeting with the country’s authorities. UNHCR has approximately 9,700 employees in 126 countries.
