São Paulo – The Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) will host on November 7 and 8 the 1st Eastern and Asian Studies Meeting, themed “Middle East, Histories, Conflicts and Identities,” at its Guarulhos campus auditorium.
On the 7th, the program kicks off at 5pm with a presentation on UNIFESP’s Eastern and Asian Studies Laboratory (Laboratório de Estudos Orientais e Asiáticos – Leoa), followed by a showing of documentary film “NEY: Nós, Eles e Eu,” on the life of the Argentinian-born Nicolás Avruj in Palestine and Israel in 2000. After the session, the director will discuss the film with Shajar Goldwaser, the holder of an International Relations degree from the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) in São Paulo.
On the 8th, the event begins at 4pm with a discussion of “Middle East Conflicts and the Civil War Issue in Syria,” featuring Murilo Sebe Bom Maihy of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and Paulo Gabriel Hilu da Rocha Pinto of the Fluminense Federal University (UFF). At 7 pm, the UNIFESP’s Samira Adel Osman and Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV)’s Salem Hilmat Nasser will speak on “Identities of the East: Islam and Histories.”
