Rio de Janeiro – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (Unrwa) has launched a website and a Facebook fan page this Friday (4th) with contents in Portuguese for the Brazilian public. The announcement was made by the agency’s commissioner-general Filippo Grandi in Rio de Janeiro, after a week of raising funds and signing cooperation agreements in Brazil. The donation campaign was launched last Monday during an event at the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce headquarters, in São Paulo.
“We have decided to keep you updated on Unrwa’s work. The website also contains general information on the agency, its programmes and the places in which it operates,” Grandi said. “It will also be a page to encourage donations,” he stated, noting that the agency’s sole source of funds is donations.
The web pages will be fed by the United Nations Information Centre in Brazil (Unic Rio) and by the agency’s collaborators in the country.
“We plan on feeding the page with news from our colleagues in Jerusalem, Syria, Lebanon, the camps, the operating areas, which we will translate into Portuguese, as well as videos, stories, statements and news on the relations between Brazil and the Unrwa,” explained the agency’s consultant in Brazil, Flávia Antunes, one of the persons in charge of the agency’s Portuguese web pages.
The Unrwa was founded at the 1949 United Nations General Assembly. At present, the agency caters to millions of Palestinian refugees at 58 camps and other sites in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Gaza and the West Bank. It works mainly in education, healthcare, social services and assistance. The Unrwa maintains schools, clinics and food distribution centres.
