Amman – The German government has pledged to increase significantly its contributions to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugee in the Near East (UNRWA), after the United States cut its aid to the agency in half. The information was published this Friday (31) by Jordanian news outlet Petra.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Mass (to the left of Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, in the picture above) said that UNRWA financial crisis is fueling uncertainty. “The loss of this organization could unleash an uncontrollable chain reaction,” he declared to Petra.
Germany has already contributed with USD 94 million to UNRWA this year and, according to the minister, the country is preparing to boost its contribution. “We are currently preparing to provide an additional amount of significant funds,” Mass declared in a letter sent to the European Union foreign ministers.
