São Paulo – The Brazilian mining company Vale is going to cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 5% until 2020. The announcement was made last week as the company issued its sustainability report. Calculations were made based on Vale’s average emissions in 2008, 2010 and 2011.
The company claims that it did not use 2009 figures because in that year, the world economic crisis impacted production and therefore emissions. The years considered in the calculation, according to Vale, reflect current production and emission levels.
The company’s plans provide that by 2020, the company will emit 33 million tonnes of CO₂ onto the atmosphere via direct emission, that is, as a result of production and fuel use. The emission total assumes a 1.7 million tonne reduction in CO₂ emissions. The calculations are based on current trends and are subject to revision.
