São Paulo – A talk to take place this month at the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, in the city of São Paulo, should cover the history of the Arab and Islamic people . On October 22, specialist Arlene Clemesha should speak about the golden period of Islam.”It was when the Arabs made an important contribution to humanity, in thought, philosophy, science. It was the peak,” said Clemesha to ANBA.
The scholar should speak about the origin of the Arab and Islamic people, the Arabian Peninsula, the growth of Islam and the establishment of the caliphs, among other topics. The talk, according to Clemesha, is turned to those who want to learn more about the history of this people.”It is a story that all Arab people share,” said the scholar.
This information, according to the speaker, is importan to those of Arab descent and also for those with diplomatic or trade relations with them. “This knowledge contributes to closer relations,” said Clemesha. According to her, there are still many stereotypes regarding the Arab people in Brasil, but the knowledge and respect of the Brazilian population for these people has expanded much in recent years, mainly after the September 11 terrorist attacks, which put the Arabs in focus.
Clemesha is a doctor in the Oriental Department at the College of Philosophy, Literature and Human Science at the Univesity of São Paulo (USP), where she is also a director of the Arab Studies Centre. She is a member of the United Nations International Coordinating Network of Palestine (ICNP-UN), a doctor and master in Economic History from USP and a graduate in history from the same institution.
Enrolment for the talk is free. It should take place on Tuesday (22) night, at 7:00 pm, at the Arab Chamber Space. The event is part of the Talk Cycle promoted by the organisation. The talks have already covered themes like the Brazilian and world economies, generation “y” and artbitration.
