Curitiba – Santa Vitória do Palmar, on the south shore of Rio Grande do Sul, should receive one of the main wind generation complexes in Latin America. The service order for immediate start of construction of Geribatu Wind Farm was signed in the city on Friday (14), by Eletrosul Centrais Elétricas, a subsidiary of Eletrobras, with Spanish wind turbine producer Gamesa.
A total of 129 wind turbines will be installed at ten farms. The enterprise is a partnership between Eletrosul and the Rio Bravo Participation Investment Fund, which has 51% of the business. The remaining 49% belong to the state-owned company. Forecasted investment is estimated at approximately R$ 1 billion.
With 258 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity, the complex, when ready, late in the first quarter of 2014, should produce energy equivalent to the consumption of over 1.6 million people. The first wind turbines should start operating in the second half of 2013.
