São Paulo – This Monday (27th), the World Bank has demanded immediate action and new approaches from African governments to minimize the impact of climate change, whose costs to the continent will be high, the financial institution warns in a report. The World Bank’s study was released at a summit on the climate resistance of African infrastructures, taking place in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
In 2012, African heads of state and government outlined a strategic development plan to address infrastructure issues in the continent and committed to investing in building hydropower dams, power stations and irrigation canals, which will be potentially vulnerable in the event of a strong impact from climate change. World Bank experts suggest that the benefits in terms of risk reduction could significantly outweigh the cost of altering existing investment plans.
