Brasília – this Wednesday (25th), the minister in chief to the Secretariat General of the Brazilian Presidency, Gilberto Carvalho, has regretted that some of the works designed to improve urban mobility and due for delivery prior to the World Cup have not been completed.
As per a survey conducted by non-government organization (NGO) Contas Abertas, only 51.7% of urban mobility projects and expansion work at the major Brazilian airports have been completed. According to the minister himself, the scenario is a cause of frustration to the government’s team.
According to him, the delay is both due to an overly “ambitious” initial project – in a bid to improve infrastructure to the entire population, rather than only those attending Fifa’s event, and to legal and managerial issues.
“Our dream was to deliver all of the works, but that proved impossible for a number of reasons. Some of them relate to delays in obtaining environmental licenses, expropriation lawsuits and even managerial issues on the part of the federal, state and municipal governments,” Carvalho stated. “We will strive not to leave any of the works already underway unfinished or paralysed,” he said.
