São Paulo – The government of Brazil is going to present the candidacy of ambassador Roberto Azevêdo to the position of director general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) for the 2013-2017 period. The election process should take place on March 31st, 2013, according to information disclosed by the Itamaraty.
Brazil is a founding member of the WTO and the country has been playing a prominent part in the multilateral trade system, as is the case in the Doha Development Rounds. Azevêdo has great knowledge of the organisation and, since September 2008, has been the Permanent Representative of Brazil at the WTO and other economic organisations in Geneva, operating as the head negotiator in multilateral trade talks.
