Yes, we have the banana genome
After having its death announced in 2003, the fruit has been given a breath of life. Brazilian researchers presented the results of the first phase of the Banana Genome. They have identified over 20 genes that may help in the development of a variety of banana that is more resistant to diseases like the Black Sigatoka, which is killing crops worldwide. Brazil is the second largest banana producer in the world, with 6.6 million tonnes picked last year.
