São Paulo – The Brazilian government has reduced the Import Tax on one of the types of sodium tripolyphosphate that the country buys from abroad. The tariff has been reduced from 10% to 2% as determined by the Foreign Trade Chamber (Camex), according to the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, to which the Camex is linked.
The sodium tripolyphosphate for which the tariff was changed is the variety used in the manufacturing of powdered detergent using spray freeze drying, registry number NCM 28353190 at the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex). The product is imported by Brazil and one of the supplying countries is Tunisia, which produces phosphates, the raw material for the product.
The tariff reduction will remain in effect for 12 months, and according to information supplied by the Ministry of Development, it has been implemented for supply-related reasons. The reduction came into force on Thursday last week, when it was published in the Official Gazette. The tax reduction will apply to a quota of 75,000 tonnes.
Brazil imports large volumes of sodium tripolyphosphate for detergent manufacturing. From January to September this year, the country purchased 42,000 tonnes of the product from foreign countries, resulting in expenditure of US$ 49.4 million. Last year, the total was 65,000 tonnes, or US$ 86.3 million. The leading supplier countries, this year, were China and Spain. Tunisia only exported 12 tonnes, the equivalent of US$ 27,000.
