Rio de Janeiro – Brazil’s Official Gazette is expected to publish on Tuesday (21) the return of the 16% tariff on cargo tire imports in Brazil. The Executive Management Committee (GECEX) – the Foreign Trade Chamber (CAMEX)’s collegiate nucleus – made the decision last week in its first meeting under the new administration.
The decision revokes the GECEX resolution #148 from January 20, 2021, which had zeroed the import tariff for five cargo tire models. Camex said Brazilian tires producers had been “facing a drop in production” caused by an increase in imports and as a result, producers were threatening to “paralyze production and carry out layoffs.” However, it did say that after an increase in import tariffs, tire producers had “signaled the retreat” with their threats to stop production and lay off workers.
Plastic resins
Additionally, GECEX decided to hike the import tariffs on four plastic resins to 11.2%. These taxes had been reduced in July and August 2022 for propylene copolymers, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). According to the government body, low import tariffs for some plastics has had “harmful consequences” for the Brazilian chemical sector as imports have risen and domestic prices have fallen.
