São Paulo – Brazilian industry output was down 0.3% in April from March and down 5.8% from April last year. According to information released this Wednesday (4th) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the decline in production was mostly a consequence of poor automotive industry performance.
According to the IBGE, production of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies was down 21.3% April-on-April. Output also declined significantly in other industry segments. Machinery and equipment output was down 9.9%, metal products output was down 10.8%, machinery, electrical devices and materials output was down 15.1% and metallurgy was down 6.2%, according to the IBGE.
Year-to-date through April, industrial activity was down 1.2% from the same period in 2013. In the last 12-year period, however, industry output has still grown, by 0.8%.
