São Paulo – Baladi, Malfuf, Said, Jaballe, Ayub and Khaleege. These are some of the Arab rhythms that dance school Shiva Nataraj, from São Paulo, should present to its Wednesday students. The percussion course, which begins on the 17th, should be taught by Alex Nasser.
The classes are guided at ballerinas, musicians and admirers of Arab music. The main characteristics and techniques for execution of rhythms will be taught, with special focus on the doumbek, a traditional percussion instrument.
Apart from the practical lessons, students may learn a little about musical theory, for better appreciation of the course. A booklet and CD will be given to students with the teaching material.
In total, there should be 16 lessons lasting one hour each, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. Alex Nasser has been a music teacher for over 20 years, licensed by the São Paulo Arts College. Apart from that, he is a member of Arab music group Banda Mouzayk.
Shiva Nataraj has been in operation since 2001 and is the only school in Brazil with a technical course in Arab dance that is recognised by the Ministry of Education (MEC).
Among the courses offered by the school are classical ballet, Arab, Gypsy and ball dancing, street dance, flamenco, jazz and eastern dance, among others.
