São Paulo- General activity at the Tanger-Med port was up 39% in 2013 from 2012. The total cargo volume stood at 34.9 million tonnes. The information was released by the Tangier Mediterranean Special Agency.
Container traffic exceeded 26.15 million tonnes, up 61% from 2012. Cargo handling in TEU, a unit equivalent to one 20-foot container, was 2.5 million TEU, up 40% from 2012.
At the French automaker Renault’s exclusive vehicle terminal, throughput was up 81% from 2012. The terminal handled 181,500 vehicles last year, 93,700 of which were made at Morocco’s Mellousa plant and then shipped abroad, while another 35,000 were inbound.
The port’s hydrocarbon terminal handled 4.1 million tonnes, out of which 2.05 million went to fuelling ships at the port itself.
The port handled 198,000 trucks, up 11% from 2012. Passenger throughput stood at 2.15 million and vehicle throughput stood at 700,000, up 2% and 3% respectively.
