Brasília – A decree made public by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply on the Federal Gazette on Monday (22) established a Crisis Committee to oversee and devise strategies to cushion the impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic on farm output and the supply of food products to the Brazilian population. The committee will support the Ministry in decision making while measures to face the public health emergency remain in force.
The committee will comprise officials of the Agriculture minister Tereza Cristina’s office and executive secretaries of Family Farming and Cooperativism; Trade and Economic Affairs; Innovation, Rural Development, and Irrigation; and Agricultural Policy. It will also include officials of the National Supply Company (CONAB) and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa). The Crisis Committee will be under the coordination of the Agricultural Policy secretary.
The committee will review output, market, infrastructure, perceptions of the society, and agricultural products; study scenarios and produce diagnosis to support the Agriculture Ministry; analyze and follow up on potential risky issues in order to prevent crisis; among other tasks. In the medium and long term, the ruling provides for structural adjustment policies, drafting up scenarios and proposals on impacts that could come in the production systems, markets and demands. It also provides for aligning these scenarios with the national and foreign situation, promote domestic and international debates, and propose alternatives and solutions.
