Algiers – Expansion works at the Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers, the capital of Algeria should be complete by early 2019, Algérie Presse Service (APS) quoted Public Works and Transport minister Abdelghani Zaalane as saying. The project cost over DZD 80 billion (USD 672.3 million at current exchange rate), the minister said.
After visiting the site in the weekend, Zaalane said the project is 88% completed, and the main building is 99% done.
An entirely new airport is being built, with capacity set to increase from a current 6 million to 10 million passengers per year.
APS said the expansion comes in line with a fleet renewal for the country’s state-run carrier Air Algérie, which is planning to purchase at least 25 new aircraft from 2019 to 2024.
The premises under construction span a 50-acre area and will include parking for 4,500 vehicles, three aprons, metro and train stations, a hotel and a new control tower.
