Brasília – The Brazilian Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) published this Wednesday (16) in the Official Federal Gazette a notice on open applications for sandwich doctorate scholarships abroad for Brazilians. CAPES is a foundation of the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC), whose primary mission is to expand and consolidate stricto sensu graduation courses, which are masters and doctoral degrees.
One thousand four hundred students will receive scholarships, with an expected investment of up to BRL 81.8 million (about USD 15,6 million at the current rate) for a period of six to ten months. The forecast is that the start of activities of the students abroad will occur between September and November this year. The sandwich doctorate is one in which part of the graduation is taken in Brazil and another part abroad.
In order to participate in the program, candidates must be enrolled in a doctorate in Brazil, not already have a doctorate, have passed the qualifying exam, or have completed the first year of the doctorate. It is necessary to prove proficiency in a foreign language and not accumulate the scholarship with benefits from other funding agencies for the same purpose. After completing the studies abroad, the scholarship holder must return to Brazil to defend the dissertation.
The first phase of the public notice, the internal selection of candidates by the higher education institution, will be open until March 31. Subsequently, those selected by the institutions must apply through the Online Registration link on the program website, from April 4 to 5:00 pm on April 25. According to CAPES, questions regarding the public notice should be sent to the e-mail pdse@capes.gov.br within two days before the end of the registration period.
