São Paulo – Students from the Arab countries Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon and Syria are eligible to pursue graduate studies in Brazil in 2021. Enrolments will be accepted until September 30 for the selection process of Programa de Estudantes-Convênio de Graduação (PEC-G), the Secretariat for Higher Education at the Brazilian Ministry of Education said.
The PEC-G program is available to students from countries in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Oceania, Asia, and Europe with which Brazil sustains agreements. After completing the program, students are expected to return to their countries of origin. Seats are made available free of charge at Brazilian universities, which are tasked with informing the Ministry of Education how many seats are available, and in what courses.
Accepted students will join their courses of choice in the first semester. Applicants are required to have completed or to be completing the last year of high-school or the equivalent thereof in their countries. Requirements also include being at least 18 years old and having at least USD 600 available per month for livelihood, plus a certificate of proficiency in Portuguese language.
Applicants are required to register with the Brazilian diplomatic office in their country, by completing a form and producing originals and copies of their high school certificate, own and parents’ birth certificates, proficiency certificate, and medical attestation of physical and mental health, among other documents. Selection has been ongoing since August 13.
Selection criteria will include analysis of school records and other documentation, average high school grades higher than 60%, and compatibility of high school curriculum with intended graduate course. Results will be made available on the website of the Educational Affairs and Portuguese Language Division (Divisão de Temas Educacionais e de Língua Portuguesa – DELP) of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The date of disclosure has not been made available in the call for entries.
The DELP has issued a list of 201 available courses, including Business Administration, Anthropology, Agronomy, Architecture, Astronomy, Biomedicine, Film, Computing, Economic Sciences, Journalism, Foreign Trade, Dance, Physical Education, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Pharmacy, Hospitality, Psychology, Social Work, Chemistry, Zootechnics, and Medicine.
Available institutions include Universidade de Brasília (pictured), Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Universidade Caxias do Sul, Universidade Metodista de São Paulo, Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP), Universidade do Vale do Itajaí (Univali) and Universidade Federal do Amazonas (UFAM), as per the list made available under the call for entries.
