The city of Maringá, in the southern Brazilian state of Paraná, has 330,000 inhabitants and produces 320 tonnes of domestic waste per day. The city hall is betting on a new technology that will eliminate almost entirely the waste that goes to the municipal landfill. The pilot project will last nine months.

Sales executives from eight countries in the Asian continent participated yesterday (09th) in a meeting at the head office of the Arab Brazilian Chamber, in the southeastern Brazilian city of São Paulo, along with representatives of other chambers of commerce, to acquire better knowledge of the tourist and business potential that Brazil has to offer. This will allow them to sell the country as a destination more effectively.
There was a 14.6% increase in the exports value in September this year, compared with the same month of 2006. The products that contributed the most to the performance were cereals and concoctions, soy and meat.
The Association for the Development of Real Estate and Tourism in northeastern Brazil, which brings together construction companies operating in the region, intends to organise a mission to the United Arab Emirates in order to attract investors. The value of apartments, hotels, and resorts currently under construction reaches 3 billion Brazilian reais (US$ 1.65 billion). Approximately two thirds of the capital invested is foreign, according to the organisation.
A total of 718,000 tonnes were shipped to the region from January to September, an increase of 40% over the same period of 2006. Revenues from exports reached US$ 924 million, a 70% increase. Foreign sales of chicken totalled US$ 3.4 billion in the first nine months of 2007.
The statement was made by the secretary-general at the Arab Brazilian Chamber, Michel Alaby. The organisation conducted a survey to show the current Brazilian economic investment environment to Arab businessmen. Floating exchange rates, a regime of inflation targets, and the Growth Acceleration Programme of the federal government are among the main incentives for foreigners to invest in Brazil.
Foreign sales of the product in the first nine months of the current year have recorded a 21.2% increase over the same period of last year. A total of 20.2 million bags were shipped. Shipments to the Arab countries represented 3.5% of that total.
