São Paulo – She was savvy enough to take advantage of the Brazilian beachwear’s good image overseas and the charm of the state of Ceará in order to export. Now, she celebrates the results and makes plans for Sky Beach, her swimsuit, bikini and gym wear company based in Fortaleza (state of Ceará), to reach the Arab countries, among other markets. The secret to get there? According to Josefa Gecilma da Silva, the director president of the company, is to invest in style, modelling and cutting edge machinery.
“Besides, we count on support from sales reps in several Brazilian capitals and attend important domestic and foreign events in our area, such as Rodada de Negócios do Ceará, the Brazil Fashion Salon, in São Paulo, and the Madrid International Fashion Salon, in Spain,” Josefa explains.
Sky Beach was established in 2002 and is run by the entrepreneur and her brothers. The business emerged out of Josefa’s experience as a modeller at beachwear companies. “From the start, we have sought to invest in exclusive models, meeting the specific needs of each customer,” she says. Now, the brand releases four collections each year, one of which is geared towards the international market.
The brand entered the wholesale market in 2003. In Brazil, its top-selling states are São Paulo, Pará, Piauí, Pernambuco and its own, Ceará.
The company started exporting in 2010, to Spain and Portugal. According to Josefa, bikini sales to Europe already account for 8% of company revenues. “We are raising that rate by attending more national and international fairs,” she says. “We are also interested in the Arab countries.”
Adult bikinis are currently the flagship of domestic and foreign sales. According to the businesswoman, it is not hard to understand the secret of success. “Brazilian beach wear is a reference for the quality of its fabrics and the design,” she explains. “That is why other countries follow our trends when it comes to choosing items to wear on the sand or by the pool” she says. “In other countries, people do not just want bikinis, they want Brazilian bikinis.”
Along these lines, the company is investing more and more in stand-out models, such as those made using stones, seeds, crochet and handiwork in general. “The use of these materials coupled with the concept of ‘Brazility’ is what makes our beach wear so appreciated,” she says.
