São Paulo – Beef exports from Brazil slid by 6% in volume to 12,139 tons and by 11% in revenue to USD 549 million year-on-year in January, the Brazilian Meat Packers Association (Abrafrigo) reported this Friday (5).
Sales to China and Hong Kong were up 62.8%, but declined markedly over the last few months of 2020, which had seen inventory-building in the lead-up to the Lunar New Year in February. Abrafrigo believes sales will return to regular levels in March.
Sales to leading importers of Brazilian beef declined, including to Chile, which ranks second, Egypt (third), Israel (fifth), Saudi Arabia (sixth), and the UAE (seventh). Sales went up to the Philippines (fourth), Italy (eighth) and the United States (ninth).
Egypt imported 4,500 tons of beef from Brazil last month, down 13.5% from January 2020. Saudi Arabia’s imports slid by 29% to 2,800 tons, and the UAE’s were down 23.7% to 2,700 tons.
