São Paulo – The Library of South America-Arab Countries (Bibliaspa) is offering a free course in Arabic language and Arab culture for youths aged 13 to 19. Enrolment is open until late September and the first classes should start in August 30th.
The Bibliaspa was established as a result of the Summit of South America-Arab Countries, held for the first time in Brazil in 2005. The institution, which also has headquarters in the city of São Paulo, aims to promote closer ties and mutual knowledge among the two regions, and to establish libraries in South America with physical and virtual collections specializing in Arab themes.
This is the first time that the organization offers a course of this type, and in addition to language, the classes will focus on films, music and information on the 22 Arab countries. The classes will be taught to three groups, one on Saturdays from 11:00 am to 02:00 pm, and the other two on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 03:00 pm to 04:30 pm and from 05:00 pm to 06:30 pm.
Each class will have up to 30 students. Also this year, 15 of these youths will be selected to travel to some Arab country and have contact with local students. The top-performing students will be selected.
In the future, Bibliaspa will offer Arabic courses to people in other age brackets. Presently, it also offers storytelling courses featuring Arab, African and South American stories, geared toward public school teachers, which are also open to the general public.
