São Paulo – The industry sector is expecting to close the year with a production of 779 thousand bicycles, a 17% increase compared to 2017, according to estimates published this Thursday (13) by the Brazilian Association of Motorcycle, Mopeds and Bicycles Association (Abraciclo). The projection was positively reviewed. Previously Abraciclo was expecting the manufacture of 765 thousand units.
From January to November, 751,784 bicycles were manufactured, a 16.5% growth compared to the same period last year. Only in November 83,726 left the factories, an 8.4% increase compared to November 2017.
The Vice President of Abracyclo’s bicycle segment Cyro Gazola said that after a four years drop, the industry is resuming a growth in 2018 thanks to a bigger product offer, more competitive prices, less bad debts, more credit supplies and an expansion in urban mobility. ‘This means a growth in cycle tracks, bike lanes, and bike paths,’ he said according to a note published by the association.
For 2019 the entity expects a 10% growth in production, a total of 857 thousand units.
In the exportation field Brazil sold 12,391 bicycles to other countries from January to November, a 13.5% increase compared to the same period last year. The primary markets are Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia.
The volume imported by Brazil fell, but still is much bigger than the exported volume. From January to November, 109,031 bicycles were bought, a 22.4% drop compared to the same period in 2017. China was by far the leading supplier.
