São Paulo – Biomecânica, a prosthesis manufacturing company from the state of São Paulo, is looking to increase its market share in the Arab world. The company exports to Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq and Syria and is seeking a partner to represent and distribute its products throughout the entire Middle East. The company also sells to Iran and Turkey, which are non-Arab countries located in the same region.
According to the company’s chief marketing officer Ricardo Brito, presently Biomecânica sells to Arabs via local distributors. However, he believes that centralizing operations would help boost sales. The Middle East accounts for 30% to 40% of exports, but Brito believes the rate could be as high as 60% to 70%.
This year, the company has restructured its export department – another reason for the director to believe sales to Arab countries should grow further. The Middle East is Biomecânica’s second foreign target, alongside Asia. The leading target region is Latin America.
Biomecânica has long-standing contacts in the Arab world and has attended Arab Health, an annual industry fair held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, since the first edition. The company has already confirmed its attendance at the upcoming edition.
The company is headquartered in the municipality of Jaú, has existed for 26 years and exports for at least 25. At a certain point in time, it shipped product to 44 different countries. Presently, approximately 20 countries buy from Biomecânica. Brito explains that one of the reasons is the fact that the company also ships product from Switzerland, where it has an office. The company has a complete plant at which to manufacture in the country, but for the time being production is outsourced.
Biomecânica’s portfolio includes 8,000 items. Most of the items are knee, hip, spinal and shoulder prostheses. It also manufactures complements such as surgical instruments and biomaterials such as orthopaedic cement. The prostheses are mostly made of steel and titanium.
Biomecânica also owns product research and development facilities in Jaú, including the Centre for Studies and Innovation in Bioengineering (CEIB) and the Laboratory for Mechanical and Metallographic Testing (Laboratório de Ensaios Mecânicos e Metalográficos – LEMM), affiliated with the Clinical Research and Monitoring Institute (IPACC, in the Portuguese acronym).
