Brasília – Brazil ranks second in the world’s production of biodiesel and is the world’s largest sugarcane ethanol producer, the secretary for Oil, Natural Gas & Biofuels of Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy, José Mauro Coelho (pictured) said in an interview on the show A Voz do Brazil. According to him, Brazil’s transportation and energy mix is one of the world’s cleanest. About 25% of the fuel the country uses comes from renewable sources and the goal is to reach 2030 with a 30% share. “This is unique in the world,” he said.
The Fuel of the Future program will be partly responsible for this increase. Launched in April this year, it aims to increase the share of renewable and low-emission fuels in Brazil’s energy mix and to develop national vehicle technologies. “Brazil has greatly advanced in Flex Fuel vehicles. In this energy transition period, we must further develop this vehicle technology.” Another goal is to develop new biofuels: “We’re looking ahead and looking for new fuels that can be added to our transportation and energy mix,” he said
According to Coelho, the biofuel market was a reality in the cargo transportation due to the use of biodiesel. Other options are natural gas and biomethane. According to the secretary, the plan is developing options for the air and water sector through the Fuel of the Future program. For the aircrafts, aviation biokerosene will be used. The Fuel of the Future program also encourages that oil and natural gas players invest in research and development.
