São Paulo – Brazil is expected to harvest 296.2 million tonnes of cereals, legumes and oilseeds in 2023, a record-high volume, government statistics agency IBGE said on Thursday (12). The estimate is 12.6% higher than 2022 harvest of 263.2 million tonnes.
The projection made public today is 0.8% higher than the second prognostic, released in November.
Year-on-year increases are expected in soybean production (24.1% or 28.8 million tonnes), the first maize harvest (16.2% or 4.1 million tonnes), the second maize harvest (2.5% or 2.1 million tonnes), herbaceous cotton (1.3% or 53,000 tonnes), sorghum (5.3% or 150,000 tonnes) and the first bean crop (3.7% or 40,000 tonnes).
“Soybean is the main positive highlight as it’ll drive the hike in 2023, recovering from the losses of 2022, when it declined by 11.4%. Maize is also a highlight as it’ll increase by 5.7% from a record-high crop of 110.2 million tonnes in 2022,” the survey’s manager Carlos Barradas was quoted as saying in a statement made public by IBGE’s news agency.
On the other hand, declines are expected in rice production (3.4% or 360,000 tonnes), the second bean crop (9.9% or 132,000 tonnes), the third bean crop (1% or 6,000 tonnes) and wheat (16.2% or 1.6 million tonnes).
In the last survey on 2022 production, IBGE estimated a harvest of 263.2 million tonnes, up 3.9% from a year earlier. Besides a 11.4% drop in soybean, a decrease of 8.3% had been estimated in rice production, as well as increases of 25.5% million for maize, 28.5% for wheat and 15.2% for cotton.
