Rio de Janeiro – Brazil’s federal government expects BRL 260 billion (roughly USD 48 billion) to be invested in transport infrastructure works and projects through the end of 2022 via concessions to the private sector. The information was made public this Wednesday (28) by Infrastructure minister Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas (pictured above).
The minister spoke during the launch of a new loop ramp for trucks at the Port of Rio de Janeiro that will handle approximately 2,600 heavy vehicles a day. He discussed expected investments and stressed their importance to national development.
“The concessions program is the way to go. It shields us from the lack of resources and enables major investments. We are moving forward with the transfer of these BRL 260 billion in assets to the private sector, and this will yield very important economic results in years to come,” he said.
Planned concessions include a sprawling federal highway network and renewal of highways already under concession. Ports will also be put under concession, and ongoing airport concessions will continue.
