São Paulo – This Friday (26), the import tax on laminated glass went up in Brazil. The Brazilian Flat Glass Distributors and Processors Association (Abravidro) reported in its bulletin that the tax rate has gone from 10.8% to 25%. A 25% import tariff on clear float glass that had been in effect since late 2024 has also been extended for another year.
The tariffs have been put in place following a decision made last November by the Executive Management Committee (Gecex, in the Portuguese acronym) of the Foreign Trade Chamber (Camex), an arm of the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services. The tariff increase and extension apply to imports from all countries except Mercosur members, according to Abravidro.
The measures cater to Abravidro requests and, according to association, are underpinned by the Conjunctural Commercial Imbalances (CCI) mechanism created by the Mercosur to shield member countries’ industries from the impact of transitory fluctuations in trade prompted by surges in imports or atypical declines in prices of imported goods.
According to Abravidro, there has been a historic increase in imports of processed glass, such as tempered and laminated glass, to Brazil. From January to November, 35,593 tons of laminated glass were imported, the highest number since recordkeeping began, in 1997, according the bulletin. Total glass imports (raw and processed) amounted to 246,971 tons by the end of November.
