São Paulo – Brazilian fine artist Menelaw Sete is exhibiting in Morocco for the first time. With backing from the Embassy of Brazil in Rabat, artworks by the Salvador, Bahia-born painter and sculptor will be featured at Le Casablanca Hotêl, in Casablanca, from Wednesday (28) until April 11. Admission is free.
Exhibition Transculturalité et Brassage (Transculturality and Creation) is organized by the Brazilian-born, Moroccan-based Ana Claudia Bourquin. “Menelaw has come at my invitation,” the producer said. “This is his first time in Morocco.”
Ana Claudia found out about the work of Menelaw Sete a few years ago and was impressed with his strong lines and colors. “He is a multiple artist when it comes to conception. At once you find traces of [Moroccan painter] Chaïbia Talal, [of French artist Henri] Matisse, [of also-French Paul] Gauguin and [of Spain’s Pablo] Picasso,” Bourquin explains.
According to her, being a contemporary artist whose work conveys an Afro-Brazilian identity, Menelaw fits into the exhibition’s theme of transculturality. The 24-piece showing pays tribute to Chaïbia Talal, a Moroccan painting icon according to Bourquin.
Menelaw Sete’s career spans almost 30 years, and his art has been featured in France, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, England and the United States, in over fifty international exhibits. He is also known as the “Brazilian Picasso,” according to his Facebook profile.
The Embassy of Brazil in Rabat provided full cultural and institutional support to the exhibit. The Embassy’s Facebook profile features a video of the fine artist – who’s also a singer – playing his acoustic guitar and singing the song Asa Branca with some of his paintings in the background.
