São Paulo – The short film “The Factory,” by the Brazilian director and scriptwriter Aly Muritiba, won second place at the Gulf Film Festival, which ended last Monday (16th) in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. Muritiba travelled to the country to attend the festival and received the prize in person.
The Factory competed against more than 1,600 films, of which 15 were selected. The short film tells the story of an inmate who tries to have his mother bring him a mobile phone in the penitentiary. The film premiered in August last year and has won 43 prizes including the Gulf Film Festival.
In his script, Muritiba, who worked as a penitentiary agent at a prison, tried to humanize the penitentiary characters, among them inmates, family members and even agents. According to an interview given by Muritiba before travelling to the Emirates, the simplicity of the narrative is one of the film’s unique features.
