São Paulo – Predilecta, a maker of sweets from the city of Matão, in the interior of the southeastern Brazilian state of São Paulo, sees in the market of North Africa an opportunity to export finished products, ready for consumption. Predilecta is one of the companies scheduled to participate in a mission that the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce and the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex) are going to promote to Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt at the end of May.
"It is a market that is now growing and has good acceptance of Brazilian sweets as well as other products in general," stated the company export manager, Ívini Granado. Her intention is to find a distributor and place her products in supermarkets and restaurants. She is going to offer jams of various flavours, chocolate drinks and guava sweets.
Ívini believes that the market in North Africa is open to new flavours. "We have already been successful in Japan and in the United Arab Emirates, where they did not know red guava paste, for example, but only the white variety," she said, referring to the fruit that serves as raw material for sweets and jams. Predilecta was one of the Brazilian companies that participated in Gulfood, a fair in the food sector that took place in Dubai, in February.
According to Ívini, Predilecta has also already sold to Egypt, but the country market is not yet consolidated. The United Arab Emirates, in turn, answer to 5% of company exports. The group also exports mashed fruit, especially guava and mango. Other products that the company offers on the foreign market are pumpkin and coconut, milk, mango, banana and sweet potato sweets, tomato sauce and extract and seasonings, like Worcester and soy sauce, and ketchup.
Exports answer to around 10% of sales made by the company, which currently has annual revenues of around US$ 200 million. The organization sells to 55 countries. Established in 1990, Predilecta has 940 employees and two other industrial plants, as well as the head offices in Matão.
