Brasília – The number of active investors in Brazilian Treasury Direct grew by 47.7% in January, up to 845,000 participants. Only in that month, 58,800 new registrations were made. The information is from the Secretary of Treasury, linked to Brazilian Ministry of Economy. The total number of investors registered reached 3.3 million in January.
Most of the titles acquired are up to BRL 5,000 (USD 1,333) each. Treasury Direct was created in January 2002 to make investments popular and allow for natural persons to buy public titles online directly from the Treasury, without the intermediation of financial agents. The investor need only to pay a tax to the broker responsible for the title custody.
Sales in January also hit a historical record for the period, reaching BRL 2.83 billion (USD 755 million). The title most request was indexed to SELIC (Treasury SELIC), whose participation in sales reached 47.9%. The titles indexed to inflation reached 31.5% of the total, and the prefixed ones 20.6%.
