São Paulo – Feature films made in Ibero-American countries will be on show from Wednesday (26) to October 2 in the Ibero-American film Week at movie theater Zawya, in Egypt’s capital Cairo. The Brazilian production Boi Neon (pictured above) will be shown at 9 pm on Saturday, September 29.
Boi Neon portrays the world of vaquejadas, or Brazilian rodeos, where men on horseback try to knock down an ox by pulling its tail. The main character is Iremar, whose job is to prepare the oxen to enter the arena. He lives with his workmates on the truck that carries the animals, and dreams of a different life as he spends his days with his partner Zé and Galega – a dancer and the truck driver – as a family unit.
Directed by Gabriel Mascaro and released in 2015, the film is a Brazilian-Uruguayan-Dutch production. It has won over 30 national and international prizes, including an Honorable Mention from the 2015 Toronto Film Festival Jury, the Special Jury Prize at the Havana Film Festival, and Best Director and Honorable Mention from the Jury at the Marrakech Film Festival. Last year it won Best film – Viewers’ Choice in the Brazilian Cinema Grand Prix.
In Cairo, the 98-minute-long Boi Neon will be shown in Portuguese with English subtitles. Admission is free. The Ibero-American Film Week is held by embassies of Ibero-American countries in Cairo and by the Zawya theater, according to information given to ANBA by the Embassy of Brazil in Cairo, which is a partner in hosting the event.
