In November, over 40 Brazilian physicists will participate in the International Conference on Physics Education, to be held in Morocco. The professionals include Antonio Ferro, who teaches science during basketball classes in the state of Maranhão (northeast Brazil). The event will bring together people from approximately 40 countries, each presenting their own innovative teaching experiences.

Algerian athlete Si Smail Yahia became totally blind at the age of 16. With the aid of his parents and friends, he started practicing sports and in 2005 was second place in the Junior world championship in the 4×100 metre relay. This week, Yahia and other visually impaired athletes are participating in the International Blind Sports Federation World Championship and Games. Competitors from Tunisia are also present, as is the case with judo teacher Mounia Kerkar, and some are from Iraq.

Professor João Baptista de Medeiros Vargens should give a talk about language in the interaction between the Portuguese and Arabic speaking countries on August 9th. The talk will be at the Arab-Syrian Cultural Centre, in São Paulo, and will also mark the release of his book about teaching Portuguese to Arabic speakers in São Paulo, capital of the southeastern Brazilian state that goes by the same name.

Today, the International Blind Sports Federation World Championship and Games begin in São Paulo. The competition is worth classification for the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. There are over 1,600 participants from 63 countries, including delegations from Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon and Tunisia. The competition ends on August 06th.

The Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce will receive, from October this year until the end of next year, technicians and students from Arab countries. They will remain in the country for approximately 20 days, during which they will get to know more about the Brazilian economy and foreign trade. Brothers Adrian and Antoine Jaoude, from Rio de Janeiro, are going to compete, on Friday and Saturday, in the wrestling competitions in the Pan-American Games. Adrian, naturalized Brazilian, was born in Lebanon and Antoine spent his childhood in the Arab country. They are sons of a Lebanese father and usually communicate in Arabic during the fights.
