Representatives of the Brazilian dairy industry should go to the country in early 2008, by invitation of the Algerian minister of Agriculture, Said Barkat, who visited the company yesterday. According to the vice-president at the company, Jacques Gontijo, the feasibility of building a plant for reprocessing powdered milk in the Arab country should be assessed.
Said Barkat, the minister of Agriculture of Algeria, visited the installations of Bertin slaughterhouse, in the interior of the state of São Paulo. He invited members of the company’s board to visit Algeria after partnerships with local companies and observed halal slaughter of cattle, following Muslim requirements.

The minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Algeria, Said Barkat, is scheduled to arrive in the country today, at the invitation of the government of Brazil. Barkat should be met by the board at the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, by Brazilian ministers and should also visit industries and installations connected to agribusiness.
The government of the Arab country wants the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), the leading Brazilian institution in the field, to establish a unit in its territory. The possibility is being evaluated by Embrapa, according to an exclusive interview granted to ANBA by its president, Silvio Crestana. Embrapa also intends to exchange experience in animal raising and food planting with Morocco.
Reinhold Stephanes, the minister of Agriculture, defended Brazilian investment in agroenergy research and in greater productivity. Exports of Brazilian agricultural products to countries in the League of Arab States grew by 17% in September of this year and by 16% in the accumulated result for the year. The main items in the export basket, in the two periods, were meats and products in the sugar and alcohol complex.
A survey disclosed last Wednesday (17th) by the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics shows that the Brazilian crop last year generated 2.8 billion Brazilian reais (US$ 1.5 billion) more than it did in 2005. Highlights included sugarcane, coffee and orange. Total production stood at 98.3 billion reais (US$ 54.1 billion).
Shipments totalled US$ 3.3 billion from January to September. Egypt remains the second largest market, and Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates also rank among the main buyers.
There was a 14.6% increase in the exports value in September this year, compared with the same month of 2006. The products that contributed the most to the performance were cereals and concoctions, soy and meat.
A total of 718,000 tonnes were shipped to the region from January to September, an increase of 40% over the same period of 2006. Revenues from exports reached US$ 924 million, a 70% increase. Foreign sales of chicken totalled US$ 3.4 billion in the first nine months of 2007.
Foreign sales of the product in the first nine months of the current year have recorded a 21.2% increase over the same period of last year. A total of 20.2 million bags were shipped. Shipments to the Arab countries represented 3.5% of that total.
