The discussions will be a tribute to Nassar, who celebrates 80 years old on November 27th, according to information released by the university’s Brazilian Literature Post-Graduate Program, which is organizing the event.
Born in the state of São Paulo, in the town of Pindorama, 380 km from São Paulo, Nassar moved with his family to the capital when he was a teenager, and he later studied Law and Philosophy at USP. He made his debut in literature with the novel Lavoura Arcaica (Ancient Tillage) in 1975, a work later adapted to the cinema in 2001. In 1978, he published another novel, Um Copo de Cólera (A Cup of Rage), which also was adapted turned into a movie, and later on came the book of short stories Menina a Caminho (Girl on the Way and Other Stories).
The books by the Brazilian author were translated to many idioms and published in countries such as Spain, France and Germany. Raduan Nassar is considered one of the great Brazilian authors. He won several awards, among them promising new author by the Brazilian Book Chamber, Prêmio Jabuti of 1976, and the 1978 Fiction Award by the São Paulo Association of Art Critics (APCA) with the book Um Copo de Cólera.
The colloquium will be opened by Marilena Chauí, from the Department of Philosophy at USP.
