São Paulo – Nacional Ossos, a synthetic bone manufacturing company based in the city of Jaú, São Paulo, ships product to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia and plans on entering new markets in the Arab world. Promising business contacts have been made with Jordan and Lebanon. “Their market is huge, we are only getting started,” says partner Paulo Costa e Silva Filho.
The products are used in teaching Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry. They are made from polyurethane, emulating natural human or animal bones. The students use them in practicing for surgery, prosthetics implants, dental interventions, dental implants and other procedures.
Nacional Ossos plans on stepping up its exports by 50% this year, and is counting on higher sales to the Arab markets to that end. Presently, the company’s leading buyer is Germany. Overall, 35 countries are targeted by the product.
According to Costa e Silva, the company started doing business with Arabs after attending the Arab Health fair in Dubai, approximately two years ago. Word of mouth was another factor on increasing business, according to the businessman. Nacional Ossos usually takes part in two international fairs in Germany, which leads to sales to various parts of the world. This year, the company is attending the European fairs again.
In addition to the fairs, however, the company will continue prospecting for clients, in a bid to meet its 50% export increase target. “There is room for growth on the Arab market, it is just a matter of making our product known,” says Costa e Silva. The bones are sold to implant manufacturers, colleges and educational institutions.
Currently, Nacional Ossos manufactures 5,000 units per month at its Jaú plant. Exports account for 20% to 25% of total sales. The company has been selling to foreign countries sporadically since its early years, but these sales have increased in the past two years, according to Costa e Silva. In the beginning, he says, sales were mostly retail, to people who used the bones for their own training.
Nacional Ossos was founded 18 years ago by Costa e Silva and Fabiana Franceschi, who are married. They studied Fluvial Technology at the Jaú School of Technology, but took on the challenge when an implant manufacturer questioned if they would be able to produce synthetic bones. They started making the product for his company and then the client list grew, first in Brazil and then worldwide.
The company manufactures all sorts of bones for studies on the human body. For Veterinary studies, the only artificial bones available emulate those of small and medium-sized dogs.
