São Paulo – Sultan Ahmed al-Jaber, president-designate of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to take place later this year in the United Arab Emirates, COP28, will participate in the Amazon Summit, to occur in Brazil, in the city of Belém, the capital of Pará state, on the August 8 and 9.
The information was delivered to the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, by the president of the UAE and emir of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in a telephone conversation this Thursday (27). The Arab leader confirmed the coming of Al-Jaber to the Amazon event.
According to information from the Presidency of Brazil, Lula and Al Nahyan spoke on the phone about the challenges posed by climate change, environmental protection, and energy transition, among other issues to be discussed at COP28. Belém, where the August summit will take place, will host COP30 in November 2025.
The Amazon Summit will discuss issues on the environmental agenda in preparation for COP28. The meeting will bring together representatives of the eight South American countries that share the Amazon rainforest – Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela – in addition to Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Indonesia, which have extensive rainforests, and other guest countries.
In conversation with the Emirati president this Thursday (27), Lula offered his condolences for the passing of Al-Nahyan’s brother, Saeed bin Zayed al-Nahyan.
