São Paulo – High-end costume jewellery by brand Melissa Ayach is being exported to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. The Brazilian brand is named after its designer, a physical therapist who found a business opportunity and a passion in creating accessories. “The products sold are striking and have unique design”, says Ayach about the shipments to Dubai. According to the businesswoman, the pieces go to an e-commerce website in the emirate.
The brand is negotiating with clients from Lebanon, the home country of the businesswoman’s husband, Jorge Ayach. The designer says that the Arab market is important for any kind of product and she wishes to sell more to the region. “We are interested in increasing sales; it is a market with great potential. We compete against an age-old tradition and the habit of wearing gold, however, our strongest suit is the price and the ease to acquire several pieces with a unique design”, she says.
The company has a factory and a showroom in the city of Campo Grande, in Mato Grosso do Sul, besides a showroom in São Paulo, in the Itaim Bibi district. The costume jewellery is entirely manufactured by the company and incorporates raw materials such as Swarovski crystals, polished acrylic and resin. Four to six collections are released every year. One of the current ones, according to Ayach, is themed after the Quadrilátero D’Oro, region in Milan, with pieces named after the area’s streets. The references for the creations are from the owner, who works alongside a team of designers.
The costume jewellery is sold at multi-brand stores and via e-commerce in Brazil. The brand first started exporting via the internet. “Clients saw our products on social networks and liked them. That was when we realized our products would be welcome abroad”, says Ayach. The first country to import the brand’s items was Spain, in November 2003. Currently, 19% of the production is exported.
The holder of a degree Physiotherapy, Melissa Ayach has always liked to pay attention to worldwide fashion trends, and ultimately switched careers by opening a multi-brand accessory store. But she started missing stronger pieces with more personality. “I am passionate about accessories; I needed to express my ideas, and I thought it was time I developed my own collection, giving it all the identity I looked for”, she says. Thus she created her company and brand, in 2012.
