São Paulo – As the countdown towards the 2022 World Cup in Qatar continues, the Group of Studies and Research on the Middle East (GEPOM) will hold an online course on the Gulf country for Brazilians. The course Qatar – History, Oil, Football and Politics is divided into two classes to take place next Monday (24) and on October 31 at 7 pm (BRT) via Zoom. The classes will be given in Brazilian Portuguese by GEPOM’s History professors and researchers Muna Omran and Andrew Traumann. Registration is open until October 24, and prices range from BRL 130 to BRL 200.
The world is turning its gaze on Qatar now that the World Cup is right around the corner. The Arab country was a British colony until 1971, and a major part of its revenues comes from the oil and gas sector. Since its independence, Qatar has sought to take center stage in the Arab world, as well as distinguishing cultural and political landmarks like the Qatar Foundation and international radio and TV station Al Jazeera.
Governed by Sharia, the Islamic law, the country has also opened up a space for women to have an active participation in society. The two classes will present the brief history of this country, its search to take center stage in the Arab world, the Arab League leadership, and its relations with the West, as well as the construction of the World Cup stadiums.
