São Paulo – The Brazilian film “Little Secret” will be shown next Tuesday (17) at the Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Center in Beirut. The drama is based on the true story of Kat, a seropositive girl who was adopted by the Brazilian sailing couple Vilfredo and Heloísa Schurmann. The Center said the movie will be shown in Portuguese with English subtitles and admission is free. Popcorn and guaraná drinks will be served.
Kat died in 2006 at age 13, and the 2016 production tells her life story, since when her New Zealander father met and fell in love with a woman from the Amazon, Brazil. In the wake of an accident, she got HIV from a blood transfusion, which she gave her husband and the daughter in her womb. After his wife passed and his health deteriorated, he ultimately gave Kat up for adoption to the Schurmanns.
The film portrays the lives of Vilfredo and Heloísa with their daughter, and their struggles with the problems that her condition brought. Kat would go out sailing with the couple and had a regular life at times, going to school and trying to make friends. The girl kept her condition private and planned to go public once she turned 14, but she passed away before that. The film is directed by David Schurmann, who wanted to tell the story of his youngest sibling.
Based on the book “Pequeno segredo – lição de vida de Kat para a família Schurmann” (Little Secret – a life lesson from Kat to the Schurmann family), written by Heloísa, the motion picture was the Brazilian Ministry of Culture’s 2017Academy Awards Best Foreign Film submission. It won Best Visual Effects and was nominated in three other categories at the 2017 Grande Prêmio do Cinema Brasileiro awards.
The Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Center will show the 107-minute movie at 8 pm (Beirut time). The Center is the cultural arm of the Embassy of Brazil in Beirut. It hosts courses, exhibitions and other activities to promote Brazilian culture in the aArab country.
