São Paulo – After a five-year hiatus, the Damascus International Fair will happen again this year. The 59th edition of the multi-industry event, which was held on a yearly basis since 1954 until a forced interruption caused by the war in 2012, will run from August 17 to 26 in Syria’s capital.
Brazilian companies looking to join the event can get in touch with the embassy of Brazil in Damascus, according to Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce CEO Michel Alaby. “Now is time to reenter the Syrian market. The country needs product from virtually all existing industries,” he says.
Forty companies from Brazil have been invited and are considering going. Many have exported to Syria in the past. Alaby claims opportunities are available for items including power generators, plastic tubes, building material, machinery and equipment, dentistry equipment, and sugar processing machinery.
“These products are needed so Syria can be rebuilt. The country also needs products for infrastructure works,” says Alaby.
According to the Arab Brazilian Chamber CEO, payment and transportation options are available via third-party countries such as Lebanon.
This year’s Damascus International Fair will span 83,000 square meters near the International Airport, the organizers have reported. The event was once part of the official calendar of international expositions, and Brazil was an active participant with several exhibiting companies. Prior to the war, the fair would feature 4,000-plus exhibitors from close to 50 countries.
