São Paulo – The economist José Roberto Mendonça de Barros will give a lecture entitled “Perspectives for the economy,” on international and Brazilian issues, next Tuesday (9th) at the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce headquarters in São Paulo. Anyone can attend the presentation free of charge, but registration is required on the link at the bottom of this page.
Mendonça de Barros will address the global scenario, with an emphasis on Europe, Asia and United States. He will also review the commodities sector and the perspectives for the Brazilian economy in the next few months.
A founding partner of MB Associados, Mendonça de Barros was the Economic Policy secretary to the Brazilian Ministry of Finance between 1995 and 1998, during the first term in office of Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1995-2003). The economist developed the project for the New São Paulo Stock Exchange (Bovespa) and is a member of the boards of Bank Santander in Brazil, BM&F Bovespa, and construction company Tecnisa. Presently, he is also a columnist for newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo.
The Arab Brazilian Chamber CEO Árabe, Michel Alaby, says Mendonça de Barros’ talk will help participants to better understand the unstable economic scenario. “He has been a part of the Executive Branch in Brazil, he is a board member at several companies and he studies the economy. He has a background in various sectors, and he understands the moment we are going through right now,” said Alaby.
To the CEO, the current scenario is challenging for Brazil, because crisis-laden Europe is importing less and setting out to export more. In that context, said Alaby, Europeans are looking to boost their exports and import items from countries in Africa and Southeast Asia, rather than in South America.
This will not be the only lecture held by the Arab Brazilian Chamber this year. Talks on Islamic law and Islamic finance are scheduled.
